1890 Passamaquoddy Wax Cylinders

June 25 @ 7:00 pm

DR. DWAYNE TOМАН

Director and Curator of the Sipayik Museum Teacher of the Passamaquoddy Language and Culture
Preserving Language: The 1890 Passamaquoddy Wax Cylinders

Come hear the story of Dwayne Tomah, one of the youngest fluent Passamaquoddy speakers and 2024 Lunder Institute Fellow, and his mission to transcribe the historic recordings made by anthropologist Jesse Walter Fewkes in 1890 in Calais, Maine using a phonograph borrowed from Thomas Edison.

The recordings were held by the Library of Congress for decades and contain Passamaquoddy songs, stories, and vocabulary providing a precious link from the past to current day. Traditional Peskotomuhkatikuk lands include what is now Hancock and Washington Counties in Maine and western New Brunswick.
