We’ll visit area hotspots at a leisurely pace while learning about bird song and sight identification\, bird habitats and behavior\, and we’ll pay extra attention to enhancing your field birding skills and enjoyment of nature. \nThe entire tour will be based out of Schoodic Institute which is ideally situated just a stone’s throw from Schoodic Point\, a migration checkpoint that tallies tens of thousands of migratory birds annually. Lodging is in cozy cabins where you are often awakened by birdsong – Hermit Thrush\, Winter Wren\, and Magnolia Warbler. Blue-headed vireos and Northern Parula warblers often serenade you as you walk to Schooner Commons\, the Institute’s dining hall. SUMMARY:Landscape of Change with Halcyon
DESCRIPTION:August 27\, 2022\, 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm\nJoin us for an evening of music and imagery featuring Halcyon\, the renowned Maine-based string quartet\, as they share their love of music in ways that foster connection\, community\, vibrancy\, joy\, warmth\, and accessibility. In each concert\, they work to create a space that draws upon word\, art and music to tell a story that is relevant to our community. \nThis year\, Halcyon will perform classical compositions accompanied by a multimedia presentation that explores how our environment is changing around us\, along with findings from our work through Landscape of Change. Launched in April 2019\, Landscape of Change focuses on comparing the Mount Desert Island environment past and present to document change and inform decisions about how to respond today to ensure a livable future. It is a collaboration between MDI Historical Society\, MDI Biological Laboratory\, Schoodic Institute\, College of the Atlantic\, National Park Service\, and A Climate to Thrive. \nIn conjunction with this special performance by Halcyon\, and adding to this exciting event\, will be the work of local artist Jennifer Steen Booher. We are honored to exhibit Booher’s work from her series\, “We Change With Them\,” an exploration of shifting ecosystem dynamics resulting from climate change. \nJennifer Steen Booher is an artist and photographer from Bar Harbor\, Maine. Her work explores the intersection of science and history\, incorporating observations and concerns about ecosystem dynamics and marine debris.  \nThe performance will start at 6:00 PM in Moore Auditorium located at Schoodic Institute. Exuberant vocals are supported with Julia Lane’s unique self-taught\, award-winning Celtic harp style\, and Fred Gosbee’s expertise on 12-string guitar\, violin and woodwinds. Their deep appreciation for the unique character of their home state of Maine\, as well as the Celtic lands\, Castlebay blends history\, legend and experience into their personable performance style. \nSince 1984 Fred Gosbee and Julia Lane have created a body of work which celebrates Maine’s maritime heritage and environment. Known for their arrangements of traditional music\, they have also received critical praise for their evocative original compositions; Gosbee for his finely crafted narrative ballads and Lane for her imagery and beautiful melodies. \nCastlebay has frequently appeared at sea music festivals in both the United States and Europe They have shared their songs and stories on concert stages from Nova Scotia to Florida where they have delighted audiences of all ages. \nTogether\, Lane and Gosbee have written\, recorded and produced two albums of original music\, Song of the Sea and The Ballad of Cappy John . These songs depict the lives of those who live by the sea\, not only the deep water sailors\, but also the shipwrights\, coasters\, fisherman and their wives. These are the people who established Maine as a maritime legend and who continue to build that legend with their daily lives of skill\, hard work and pride. \nIn 2006 they released a live concert recording of maritime songs\, Islands In Time. This CD was recorded in several venues from Maine to North Carolina between 2004 and 2006.

Suspended within its pale glow are late summer’s most prominent constellations. \nGuided by astronomy volunteer Richard Luecke\, take a tour along this river of starlight\, through Perseus and Cassiopeia in the northeast\, to Cygnus the Swan hovering overhead\, and down through Aquila\, Zeus’s pet eagle. Each has a story to tell. \nThis event\, appropriate for ages 10 and up\, features a 50-minute image-enhanced presentation and a 30-minute outdoor laser tour (weather permitting). DESCRIPTION:Summer Lecture Series: Old Collections\, New Analyses: Wabanaki Archaeology at Acadia National Park\, Maine\nAugust 9\, 2022\, 6pm – 7pm\nJoin us for a FREE evening lecture with Dr. Bonnie Newsom\, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Associate Faculty in the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine.  \nAcadia National Park (ANP) in Maine is home to at least 24 coastal shell-bearing archaeological sites reflecting the last 3\,000 years of Native American life. Most of these sites are threatened by climate change-induced impacts such as sea-level rise and increased storm intensity – the result being an irrecoverable loss of Wabanaki heritage.  \nIn a new study of archaeological collections from previous studies\, Wabanaki archaeologists are re-analyzing the material heritage of their ancestors and integrating Wabanaki language and values to inspire deeper connections between past and present peoples. Here in Acadia\, we are dealing with hotter temperatures\, rising sea level\, and increasing storm frequency and intensity. \nDuring the lecture\, Director Sams and a panel of early-career science professionals will discuss some of the most pressing climate challenges in our national parks\, and the importance of Indigenous leadership and knowledge as well as conventional science to inform our response to ecological transformation. The panel will be moderated by Andrew Revkin\, environmental journalist and Director with the Earth Institute at Columbia University. \nThe Goldstein Lecture serves to convene and inspire on critical topics for parks\, people\, and the planet. The lecture is named in honor of Alan Goldstein\, an accomplished businessman\, philanthropist\, sailor\, and environmental advocate. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Diana Quinn\nProspect Harbor United Methodist Church\n57 Main Street\, Prospect Harbor \nThis class demystifies the ancient painting medium called encaustic\, which uses hot beeswax and resin + pigments. We will first learn how to fuse layers of encaustic medium on cradled wooden boards\, then use colorful bleeding tissue paper to create luminous collages. We’ll then learn several techniques including scraping\, incising\, incorporating found objects (the lighter and thinner the better)\, and image transfers. For the brave\, we can set some of our paintings on fire.
